Effect of wartime violence across generations
The WarGen project investigates the effect of exposure to wartime violence across generations in Bosnia & Herzegovina (BiH) and Germany. We study the consequences of wartime (sexual) violence on gender norms, trust, and support for liberal democracy. Focusing on BiH, we also explore whether memories of past violence spurred or discouraged renewed military mobilization. Using both qualitative interviews and large-scale surveys, the project seeks to deepen our knowledge as to how past violence shapes the fabric of society and may set the conditions for both societal progress and renewed violence.
